The job of picking your premium players can sometimes be a tough one one for fantasy coaches. Ideally you want these players to be high scoring, durable, reliable and feature in the top dozen averaging players across their positional line - in other words, we want them to be our 'set and forget' players.
But what happens when you have two premiums on your mind, you can only afford one and it seems impossible to split them? The Tragic is here to help. In the lead up to round one, The Tragic will be pitting some of the best premium players against one another to help coaches make the tough decision.
Welcome to the Head 2 Head series... So, who will you choose?
Both Grundy and Gawn have established themselves as premier ruckmen of the competition at relatively young ages - especially for tall players who typically take longer to develop. It will be interesting to see which way coaches go this year and whether or not some may be able to squeeze both in, to set and forget their ruck department.
Grundy is your typical mobile ruckman in a similar mould to fantasy legend Dean Cox. He gets plenty of the ball around the ground (averaged 18.4 disposals in 2016) while Gawn's disposal rate isn't quite as impressive (14.5 in 2016), he has the upper hand in the hitout department with a whopping average of 42 last season. Both have been highly durable players over the past two seasons and still have growth in their games having played under 70 career games. Collingwood and Melbourne are in a good space at the moment and should be pushing for similar positions on the ladder in 2017, something that will only aid these ruckmen in terms of their fantasy scoring and consistency.
It's slim pickings in the ruck department at Collingwood so this should see Grundy play heavy minutes in 2017 to shoulder the ruck. The Magpies got rid of Jarrod Witts and the only other supporting staff to give him a chop out will be Moore, White and Cox. While at the Demons big Max has a similar scenario on his hands with Jake Spencer the only other real ruckman at the club able to help out. They may use Cam Pederson if he can get a spot in the best 22 as a forward, but other than that the only other option is Jack Watts who the Demons would rather keep forward as much as possible.
